Al's father, Alfio Vecchio, as a young man in Astoria, Queens, NY. Alfio died when Al was 12 years old, so we never met him. Our Dad told us that Alfio owned and ran a cigar shop and that he had a great (and irreverant!) sense of humor.

Roots 3

Al's mother, Giovanna di Monaco, arrived in New York with her family in 1916. She lived with us in our house in Jackson Heights, Queens until her death in 1976. We called her Nanny. She went blind from diabetes when we were very young but was still very jolly and enjoyed singing us children's songs in Italian. She and Al both loved Verdi operas and Neopolitan pop music.
